Sydney Blue Sox CEO Adam Dobb reports that Team Italy pitcher Alessandro Maestri will have surgery this week and miss the remainder of the Australian Baseball League (ABL) season after suffering a right-hand fracture when struck by a ball hit by off the bat of Melbourne Aces’ Nate Samson early in the game at Melbourne Ballpark on January 2, 2020. In his second consecutive season for the Blue Sox, Alessandro Maestri has been the dominant ace in the Sydney pitching rotation. He has developed a loyal following Down Under since being crowned the ABL Fan Choice Award in 2012 when he made his ABL debut while serving as the workhorse of the Brisbane Bandits pitching staff during the 2011-12 ABL season.
Alessandro Maestri concludes the 2019-20 ABL season with a 2-2 record in seven starts. In 35.1 innings of work, he registered a 3.06 ERA with 34 strikeouts and five walks allowed. The Sydney Blue Sox are currently in third place in the ABL Northeast Division with a record of 11-15 and are three games behind leaders Auckland Tuatara. There are another 14 games remaining before the ABL playoffs begin. May Alessandro Maestri have a speedy recovery so that he can once again become the Team Italy pitching patriarch in 2020.
