Team Italy claims U18 European Baseball Championship semifinal berth after 2-1 win over Spain

The Italians punched their ticket to the U18 European Baseball Championship semifinals after defeating Spain 2-1 on Thursday, July 11, 2024 in Regensburg. Team Italy returns to Armin Wolf Baseball Arena on Friday, July 12th at 6 pm to face undefeated Germany.

Team Italy was first to get on the board in the top of the first inning after an RBI single by Luca Magnani. Spain answered in the bottom of the first inning when Diego Alcala doubled and later scored on a wild pitch by Team Italy starting pitcher Giacomo Taschin. The Italian hurler went on to allow just one more hit with 11 strikeouts and one walk before being relieved by closer Filippo Sabatini in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn the win. Filippo Sabatini picked up the save and gave up one hit with two strikeouts. 

In the top of the third inning, Lorenzo Barbona collected his second hit of the contest. After his leadoff double down the left field line, he advanced to third base on a wild pitch by Spain starter Andres Pena and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from Giacomo Taschin to put Team Italy in front 2-1 and eventually win the game.
