Team Italy manager Gilberto "Gibo" Gerali nearly shocked the world when his Azzurri squad was just short of upsetting powerhouse Japan in a dramatic 10-inning showdown during Haarlem Baseball Week in the Netherlands at Pim Mulier Stadium on July 13, 2018. Luis Lugo splendido partente contro il Giappone alla Haarlem Week 2018 (ML Oldmanagency)As per extra-innings rules, baserunners were placed on first base and second base in the tenth inning. The Japanese, desperate for the win, resorted to playing smallball by moving over the runners with a groundout to first base and a perfectly-executed squeeze bunt for a walk-off 1-0 victory over Team Italy in the bottom of the tenth inning.

Team Italy pitcher Luis Lugo threw a two-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks during his five inning start. Relievers Alex Bassani and Filippo Crepaldi were equally as impressive by only allowing one hit each. Japan matched the pitching trio's performance limiting the Azzurri offense to base hits from Chris Colabello, Nico Garbella, and Federico Celli.

Despite the heartbreaking loss to Japan, Team Italy demonstrated the underdog squad can effectively compete against the world's elite. The Italians return to play Euro rival the Netherlands on July 14 at 9 am (EDT). Team Italy then battles Cuba on July 16 at 8 am (EDT) and Chinese Taipei on July 17 at 8 am (EDT) during the single round-robin competition. Haarlem Baseball Week playoffs begin on July 20 and continue through July 22. Forza #Italia! #LetsMakeItHappen
