Team Italy softball pitchers dominate with 16-0 shutout over Peru

Azzurre softball pitching legend Lisa Birocci Banse came out of retirement for Team Italy in an exhibition game against Peru in Saronno on March 27, 2019. The proud Italian American hurler is making a comeback to help Team Italy women’s softball manager Enrico Obletter’s squad qualify for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Like the good old days, Lisa Birocci Banse did not disappoint as she pitched two scoreless innings before handing the ball off to “Iron” Greta Cecchetti. 20190327 Italia Softball vs Perù (Michele Gallerani/FIBS)Then skipper Enrico Obletter witnessed his Italian pitching ace strike out five batters in her three innings of work. Relievers Ilaria Cacciamani, Alice Nicolini, and Laura Bigatton preserved the 16-0 shutout over Peru.

The Team Italy offense went right to work when Priscilla Brandi knocked in two runs in her first at-bat and later followed up with a home run. Giulia Longhi also flashed her speed on the bases with back-to-back steals of second and third. It was an overall team effort as everyone contributed at the plate to keep the game out of reach. Team Italy looked like this defensively: Marta Gasparotto behind the plate as catcher, Priscilla Brandi at first base, Lara Cecchetti at second base, Chiara Bassi at shortstop, Giulia Longhi at third base, and Sofia FabbianValeria Bettinsoli and Fabrizia Marrone in the outfield. Luna Oliveti served as designated hitter. Team Italy concludes its Saronno Spring Training program with a final game against the Peruvian National Softball Team on March 28 at 5 pm.
