After defeating the Republic of South Africa 7-0 in the morning of day four of the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Junior Women’s World Championship (JWWC) in Clearwater, Florida, the Team Italy U19 players returned to the Eddie C. Moore Complex for another challenging feat in the afternoon during the international 26-country tournament and lost 3-0 to Chinese Taipei (ranked #9) on July 27, 2017. Despite the end result, Team Italy U19 manager Enrico Obletter knew his squad played their best game against Chinese Taipei.

Lefty starter Carlotta Salis pitched well early and held a disciplined Chinese Taipei lineup scoreless in the first inning. Although Team Italy’s Carlotta Salis kept 20170727 Italia Under 19 Carlotta Salis contro Taiwan JWWC2017 (MG-Oldmanagency)Chinese Taipei in check, the Asian powerhouse managed to score a run on a passed ball in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Team Italy came fighting back and threatened to score big, but a two-out rally was cut short. Elisa Princic walked and Alessandra Rotondo followed with a single to right center field. Then Susanna Soldi reached first base on an infield error to load the bases, but Team Italy failed to score any runs.

Team Italy U19 manager Enrico Obletter called on reliever Chiara Biasi after starting pitcher Carlotta Salis surrendered two more runs to Chinese Taipei in bottom of the third inning. Relief pitcher Chiara Biasi was impressive on the mound as she kept Team Italy in the game and Chinese Taipei off the bases. Unfortunately, time ran out for Team Italy as Chinese Taipei quashed any hope for the Italians to score in the game.

With the heartbreaking loss to Chinese Taipei, Italy’s record drops to 3-3 in the tournament, thereby eliminating the team from the top tier pool winner’s bracket and placing the squad in the 9th through16th place pool competition. Team Italy plays against New Zealand on July 28, 2017. The U19 Juniors must win the single elimination game in order to stay alive in the 99 game tourney. The WBSC Junior Women’s World Championship continues through July 30, 2017. Forza Italia!
