Team Italy women's softball squad defeats Greece 9-1 in Super 6

After three consecutive wins over Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Russia in the , the Team Italy women's softball squad recorded a 9-1 mercy-rule win over Greece at ETO Ballpark in Hoofddorp, the Netherlands on September 21, 2018

After three consecutive wins over Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Russia in the , the Team Italy women's softball squad recorded a 9-1 mercy-rule win over Greece at ETO Ballpark in Hoofddorp, the Netherlands on September 21, 2018. Team Italy's Amanda FamaTeam Italy manager Enrico Obletter called on starting pitcher Laura Bigatton, who rose to the occasion by throwing a two-hitter with four strikeouts and two walks. Supported by a strong Azzurre defense behind her, she pitched all five innings of the abbreviated mercy-rule contest.

Due to the injury to sparkplug Laura Vigna, Amanda Fama assumed the role of Team Italy leadoff hitter. Her debut at the top of the lineup went off with a bang as she hit an inside-the-park home run in her first at-bat. She did not disappoint in her follow-up during the top of the second inning. After Ilaria Cacciamani walked and Valeria Bettinsoli singled, Amanda Fama put Team Italy on top 3-0 with her two-run double. She collected another double in the fifth inning to end the contest, going 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Highlights included an infield single from the speedy Susanna Soldi and a bases-loaded inside-the-park homer by Giulia Longhi. During the battle against the Greeks, Team Italy also collected a double from Fabrizia Marrone as well as base hits from Elisa Princic and Valeria Bettinsoli.

With the 9-1 mercy-rule victory over Greece, Team Italy improves its record to 4-1. Manager Enrico Obletter along with coaches Federico Pizzolini and Lisa Birocci-Banse have done an outstanding job with the young and talented Azzurrre squad. The Super 6 softball consolation round begins on September 22 at 10:30 am (4:30 am EDT) for the fifth and sixth-place teams followed by another contest at 1 pm (7 am EDT) for the third and fourth-place squads. The top two finishers square off in the Super 6 softball championship on September 22 at 6 pm (12 noon EDT). will provide live streaming of all games.
